Switcheroo weekend...

I need to document a special weekend in our family's life before I forget some of the details that went with it! We have a tradition of spending one weekend (usually in the fall when the boys have a day off from school) with intentional time with each of our kids. We pull out the calendar and block off chunks of time where Donny and I can take each of the kids out separately.

So, a couple of weekends ago, it was "Switcheroo Weekend 2009"! Life has gotten a little more complicated - this was Brady's first time to be a part of Switcheroo (I think), and we were in the middle of flag football season and had some other things to schedule around, but we did it! Friday afternoon, Donny carved pumpkins with the big boys while Brady napped (not an individual activity, but fun!).

Saturday, Tyler had a football game then Donny and Brady went out for lunch then to PetSmart to look at all the animals (our little animal lover). I had Colby and Tyler with me at home - I think this was the period of time when Tyler got in BIG trouble for "lack of sportsmanship" playing the Wii....and we had to deal with that.

My big boy finally got to play quarterback...and he LOVED it. He's still better at defense than offense, but he sure loved getting to play the coveted quarterback position!

Colby and I got all ready and went out on a fun date that night to a wedding. First, though, we went shopping for special snacks to take over to his teacher's house, Mrs. Campbell. That week of school had been First grade teacher appreciation week and she was still out with her son, Cooper. Cooper had been in the hospital for over 3 weeks and, praise the Lord, was finally home! We loved on her and gave her some cards from kids at school with her snacks then headed on to the wedding. We had a BLAST. I think Colby would say that his favorite part of the wedding was "learning" how to write in cursive on Teresa and Martin's wedding program (like the type font of the program!) and also "passing notes" back and forth with me on same said program. I think that was a first for him - silently communicating with each other in a place where we had to be nice and quiet! I wish I could have snapped a picture of his sweet face with a HUGE smile on it as he passed that paper back and forth with me. Precious. We were daring each other to get up and blow out the candles that the wedding party was lighting and to dance in the aisle while the music played at the recessional. We giggled and giggled...and I saved that program in a special place.

At the reception, his favorite part was eating LOTS of the chocolate Texas pieces that were at each table. I tried to get him to dance with me (which he is the King of in the privacy of our own home) but he was a smidge on the shy side! We left before they cut the cake to he could get some McDonald's...wasn't a huge fan of the wedding buffet food (which was really good, Teresa!). He got to stay up later than his brothers - and that right there is reason to celebrate when you are a kid.

That night, Donny had taken Tyler and Brady out to I35 north of our house on their way to church to watch the Blue Angles perform and they loved it. They all went to the Heritage Church of Christ Trunk or Treat down the road from us after church and enjoyed dressing up and playing some games (and seeing the Head family!).

On Sunday, Tyler and I went to breakfast at the Snooty Pig and ate more pancakes than even HE could put away (Tyler has never met a stack of pancakes that he couldn't devour quickly - a 3 stack at Snooty Pig was a little too much even for him). I loved our conversation about friends at school, about how he is feeling about school work (math is hard), and what he wants to do when he grows up (still wants to be a movie maker after he plays professional football. Whatever.). I love that he is old enough to have some really "real" conversations with me. He is a deep thinker, my Tyler. I love him like there's no tomorrow, and I'm so proud of him. We were figuring out what we wanted to do next, when Aunt Moni called to tell me she had a VIP parking pass to the airshow if we wanted it. We were all over that - we went to pick it up then picked up the rest of the family and were off! We decided that we LOVE the airshow! The boys all loved seeing a bunch of planes up close and watching some small plane stunts as well.

watching the plane to tricks above us...pretty cool!

The boys loved this plane - then in a few minutes we saw it flying over our heads doing cool tricks!

When we got back, it was time for Brady and I to go to lunch - his favorite McDonald's - then to the car wash. Since my baby boy was little, he has LOVED going to "the washing" as he used to call it. He convinced Aunt Moni to go a couple of times in a row even, I think (what's an extra $3 for your nephew, right?). Mom's too cheap and practical for that, but I'll go one time for my littlest one when he wants! ha! What I really loved and cherished up in my heart was hearing my typically "mama's boy" really wishing that he and his Daddy could go out together again...he had enjoyed his Daddy time so much he wanted more.

After that was Christmas show rehearsal we had the Upwards Flag Football awards ceremony at the church. Then I took the boys and met my sister at the Legacy Church of Christ Trunk or Treat, which was so fun. Brady saw his teacher, Mrs. Potter, and all the boys loved seeing Mrs. Paul, the director who has loved them all. Whew! What a DAY!

Coaches Darrell and Dad - GREAT team!
The boys taking a "silly picture" after I snapped an all together picture!

The next day, Tyler and Donny were able to go to breakfast together for some time, then went to Academy to look around at sports things - you know, man stuff. And that was the last "activity" of Switcheroo weekend, folks.

I think this weekend tradition needs to happen more - it reminds me why I love each of my boys for their very different personalities, and it reminds me that I am married to an amazing man who treasures our children, and they treasure him as well. I am blessed.
